UT Tyler Scholarships • The University of Texas at Tyler offers many scholarships designed to attract and retain outstanding degree-seeking students. • Students may not receive more than one academic scholarship award from the university each semester. • Scholarships may require a “Letter of Appreciation” to be completed before funds can be disbursed.
Returning Student/College Scholarships • They range in criteria, requirements and amounts. • Scholarship funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. • Fall: April 15 • Spring: Nov. 15 • Summer: Jan. 15
Outside Scholarships • Scholarship monies provided from organizations outside of UT Tyler • Submit checks to the OSC • One-Stop Service Center Scholarship Department3900 University Blvd.Tyler, TX 75799 • Endorse check if necessary

Scholarship Search Tips Scholarship Scams • Applying for legitimate scholarships does NOT cost money • Do not give out personal information until you have verified that scholarship organization is legitimate • Legitimate organizations will not guarantee a scholarship • Be aware of “Limited Time Offers” - Legitimate scholarship organizations will not pressure students to apply. • All scholarships will have some type of eligibility requirements. • Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You – Legitimate organizations will provide contact information
Scholarship Search Tips • Get organized (keep a calendar) • Keep track of scholarship deadlines • Apply for ALL scholarships you may qualify for, regardless of amount • Use a professional email address • Don’t give up
Writing Scholarship Essays • Follow directions • Be interesting • Be honest • Use an outline • Introduction paragraph • Thesis statement: What’s the main point of your essay? • First paragraph topic that supports your thesis • Second paragraph topic that supports your thesis • Third paragraph topic that supports your thesis • Conclusion paragraph • List all citations • Proofread essay
Exemptions & Waivers • Exemptions are a type of financial assistance allowing certain Texas residents to attend a public college or university in Texas without paying tuition, or in some cases, tuition and fees. • Waivers pertain to certain students who are not Texas residents. • Requests for exemptions or waivers must be completed prior to the census date each semester. • www.uttyler.edu/financialaid/exemp_waivers.php
