Myths About Financial Aid • Our income is too high to qualify. • We’ve already saved a lot of money so we won’t get any. • Our child will only be attending college part time. • Our older child wasn’t eligible for financial aid, so this one won’t be either. • There is not enough aid for everyone.

  4. Where to look for scholarships... • Search the web. • Explore state programs . • Check out the public library. • Visit college financial aid websites. • Investigate private sources of funding. • Check with your high school guidance office.

  5. Scholarship Scams Scam-Spotting Rules of Thumb • Legit scholarships are never guaranteed. • Don’t pay money to get money. • Too good to be true? It probably is. • Spend time, not money. • Feel suspicious? Trust your instinct.

  11. Reminders… • Ask someone who knows you well and likes you! • Provide them with additional information in writing: extracurricular activities, awards, work experience, career goals… • Don’t forget to thank someone for taking the time to write you a letter!

  12. Tell us three wonderful things about you!! Purpose of a Scholarship Essay • It’s an opportunity to tell the scholarship committee who you are and why you deserve their money.

  13. Tips for writing the essay… • stick to the subject • don’t exceed the word limit • type it whenever possible • have several people proofread your essay before you send it

  19. Applying for Bright Futures? • Track eligibility through the High School Academic Evaluation on FACTS.org • Complete the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) on floridastudentfinancialaid.org beginning December 1 of your senior year • Don’t forget to save the copy of your application!
