Kimberly Clark Owensboro Mill Overview • 340 KC employees • 310 Technicians and Specialists • 30 Salaried Resources • 25 Contract facilities maintenance • 15 Contract material handling • 1,200 acre site, boarding the Green and Ohio rivers • 12 acres under roof • 650 acres productive agriculture • After the cost of fiber, energy is the second largest cost of manufacturing for the Owensboro site
Energy Conservation at Kimberly-Clark • Over 100 production plants worldwide. • 23 plants in US, 1 in Canada. • Energy usage and cost at each plant tracked on global database since 1980’s. • Global energy efficiency (EE) program started early 1990’s – Vision 2000. • 5-year energy reduction targets set at each plant based on most energy efficient production assets within K-C. Now working on achieving Sustainability 2015 targets. • Corporate energy team performs energy audits at each plant every 3-5 years. • Each plant has list of EE projects, with capital cost and energy savings, to reach targets.
Energy Conservation at Kimberly-Clark • 11% of total energy used globally is from renewable sources. • Installed landfill gas project in 2008 at US plant, provides 20% of natural gas used at the production facility. • Installed 999 KW solar power system in Italy. • Biomass steam plant installed in Brazil. • 100% green power (wind) contract at World HQ building in Texas. • Since 2000, in response to high electricity prices, K-C has installed electricity and steam cogeneration (CHP) at two US plants, one plant in Italy, and currently in startup at a plant in Australia. From 2011 to 2012, K-C reduced global energy consumption by 11.7 trillion Btu, enough energy to power more than 300,000 houses for one year, while sales increased from $20.84 billion to $21.06 billion.
