Our Purpose • To acknowledge that we are not just part of the Cal Poly campus but also the San Luis Obispo community. • 72% of the students polled said they did not feel knowledgeable about San Luis Obispo.

Our Location • SLO is located 200 miles north of Los Angeles and 220 miles south of San Francisco. • City is only 10 sq. miles • County is 3,300 sq. miles • “Mediterranean marine climate” • 70 degree average temperature • 315 sunny days per year on average
Our Demographics • Population: 45,000 in the city, over 270,000 in the county • 40% of the city’s population made of Cal Poly students • Median resident age: 26.5 years old (as compared to 45.6 years median age in California)
Our Demographics • 5 public elementary schools, Laguna Middle School, SLO High School, and Cuesta in the immediate city • 8 of the top 25 employers in the county are educational institutions (Cal Poly, Cuesta, various school districts, etc.) • Over 7,000 jobs!
Town & Gown Issues • “Town”= the non-academic population • “Gown”= the university population • Town & Gown often suggests friction and unpleasant interaction between the university and the non-student community
