What is the ACT? • A national college admission examination Tests in: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. • ACT results are accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and universities. • The ACT includes 215 multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete with breaks. The actual testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes (plus 30 minutes if you are taking the Writing Test). • The ACT offers an optional Writing Test. Most colleges require the writing portion!

General Information • ACT lets the student decide what set of scores they want sent to colleges. • The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. • Mathematics makes up 25% of ACT’s test score. • You may guess on the ACT no penalty for a wrong answer. • Prepping for the ACT will raise your scores! • SAT sends scores of every testing attempt. • The SAT has 3 components: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test. • Mathematics makes up 50% of SAT’s test score • No wild guessing - wrong answers mean minus ¼ points on the SAT. • Prepping for the SAT will raise your scores. How much does the ACT cost? • The 2011-2012 basic registration fee is $33.00 which includes score reports for you, scholarship search, and up to four score reports to your college choices that you list at the time of registration. • The basic registration plus the Writing fee is $49.00. • If you are on free/reduced lunch you are eligible for a test fee waiver. See your College and Career Center Advisor for a waiver.

6. How Often Can I Take The ACT ASSESSMENT? • You can take the ACT as often as you wish—many students test twice, once as a junior and again as a senior. Be sure to see what scores you need for scholarship opportunities and admissions. • You should definitely consider retesting if: • You had any problems during the test, such as misunderstanding the directions or not feeling physically well • You are not satisfied that your scores accurately represent your abilities in the areas tested

7. How Will I Do On A Retest? • ACT research shows that of the students who took the ACT more than once: 55% increased their composition score on the retest

What is the SAT Assessment? • The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test that lets you show colleges what you know and how well you can apply that knowledge. • It tests your knowledge of reading, writing and math — subjects that are taught every day in high school classrooms. • Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and almost all colleges and universities use the SAT to make admission decisions.

The SAT • Each section of the SAT is scored in a scale of 200-800, with two writing sub scores for multiple-choice and the essay. • The SAT includes a Critical Reading, Math, and Writing section, with a specific number of questions related to content. • Colleges require the Writing section but only the Math and Reading Scores are added together to meet admissions requirements.
