Google Street View: Invasion of Privacy? Kelsey M. Swierczek Section 002
Overview • “Street View” • How does it work? • Demonstration
Privacy Dispute • Average people have no idea when the Google van will be driving down there street to take a picture. • Potential threat of capturing people in private, embarrassing, or even incriminating acts. • Google spokeswoman, Megan Quinn said: • “This imagery is no different from what any person can readily capture or see walking down the street... Imagery of this kind is available in a wide variety of formats for cities all around the world."
Paparazzi? • The paparazzi have been sued and fined by celebrities on many occasions for invading their privacy and capturing compromising images of them. • Does the average person have the same rights? Google Street View is said by many to be the “average person’s paparazzi.” • Blogs and websites are popping up all over the Internet containing images people find by scanning Street View and it is becoming the newest form of online entertainment!
Easier Access • Another argument concerning Google Street View is that it may provide easier access for stalkers and/or predators. • Child predators, for example, can map out distances from homes to school bus stops or find the exact address of a playground. • Street View has images of domestic violence shelters where women/men might go for refuge from an abusive partner. • If a stalker knows their victim’s address, it will take 30 seconds to find an image of their home. • Provides a great way for burglars to scout a potential break-in!
Opposition • Google doesn’t believe they are invading the privacy of individuals • Spokespeople for Google maintain that Street View is not an invasion of privacy because all of their images are fair game due to the fact that were captured in a public place. • In response to the opposition, Google has offered certain features to appeal to these individuals
