  2. Here are some of the greatest Kings and queens of Historic India. Intro

  3. Vikramaditya • An ideal king who was as wise as he was brave and strong. Matchless in war and matchless in forgiveness, an excellent ruler, he won the hearts of his people. Vikramaditya means the Sun of Valour, that is, one who is powerful as the Sun.

  4. YUDHISHTIRA • The eldest of the Pandava brothers, the heroes of the great epic,the Mahabharata. Yudhishtira lived for justice, and patiently suffered humiliation and exile.

  5. JHANSI LAKSHMI BAI • The great heroine of the First war of India Freedom. She lived for only twenty-two years. She became a widow in her eighteenth year. Jhansi, of which she was the queen, was in the grip of the cunning, cruel British. She was the embodiment of patriotism, self-respect and heroism.

  6. SHIVAJI • Shivaji was born in the fort of Shivneri in 1630. The hero who escaped from the prison of the Mughal Emperor himself, to become the ruler of a kingdom devoted to Dharma and the service of the people.

  7. DILEEPA An illustrions king of the solar dynasty; an ancestor of Sri Rama. Though ren- owned for his valour, Dileepa tended the celestial cow Nandini like a cowherd. In an ultimate act of pity, he offered himself as food to a lion to protect Nandini.

  10. KELADI CHENNAMMA She ruled over a small state, Keladi, for twenty five years (1671-1696), but proved herself a great and heroic queen. She faced the wrath of the mighty Aurangazeb, and gave shelter to Rajaram, Shivaji's son.

  11. KHARVELA • A great king of Kalinga who ruled twenty- one centuries ago. Coming to the throne when the state was in distress, he brought confidence and self-respect to the people.

  12. HAKKA-BUKKA • Hakka was the first ruler of the famous kingdom of Vijayanagar, and Bukka, his brother, the second ruler. They opposed the mighty Sultan of Delhi and brought unity and freedom to south India.
