Student Achievement Model • Purpose: improve student achievement • Method: build capacity in local districts by recognizing and maximizing leadership potential of key Teacher Leaders
Foundational Practices • Use strategies that are proven to work (research based) • Develop a habit of collecting data about student performance and using that data to inform future instruction • Provide interventions for struggling students
Year 1: Professional Growth • Develop leadership/subject-area expertise of Teacher Leaders • Study proven best practices related to effective instruction • Identify quality resources • Recommend assessment options for big-idea concepts • Produce Guiding Document specific to content area • Design Pacing Guides sequencing timeline for instruction • Involve Principals in process
Training • Focus Questions • What does good mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment look like? • How will we assess student progress and adjust instruction based on performance data? • What does an effective Teacher Leader do?
Year 2: Implementation • Building improvement teams/individual teachers study data to determine instructional changes (3-Tier Model) • Teacher Leaders and HISD consultants (general and special education) provide training and support for teachers in their building related to content GLCE, Guiding Document, Pacing Guides • Classroom teachers regularly assess student progress toward achieving foundational skills
