  2. What is Genre? • Genre is… • A French word meaning type or kind • A system to classify books by their common characteristics

  3. Types of genres • Poetry • Traditional literature • Fantasy • Science fiction • Realistic fiction • Historical fiction • Mystery • Biography, autobiography, memoir • Informational

  4. Poetry • Definition: shortened form of writing • Figurative Language: metaphor, simile, personification, idiom, hyperbole • Author’s expression of feelings and opinions • May follow a form or structure

  5. Traditional Literature • Definition: stories passed down for generations by oral storytelling • Oral storytelling- stories told verbally • Legends, folktales, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, tall tales • Foundation for fantasy

  6. Fantasy • Plot: hero’s journey/quest, often good vs. evil • Setting: often medieval, time travel, magical • Characters: Talking animals, mythical creatures, magical users

  7. Science Fiction • Plot: Alien attacks/visits, time traveling, technology, important experiments (“gone wrong”) • Setting: Advanced technology-cities, spaceships, other solar system/galaxy, time travel • Characters: Mutants, robot, aliens, “mad” scientist, talking computer

  8. Realistic Fiction • Plot: Realistic Events • Setting: Modern time; realistic place • Characters: Every day people doing every day things

  9. Historical Fiction • Plot: Authentic historical events with average or significant people • Setting:pre 1970; could be historical/important sites • Characters: Average/famous historical people

  10. Mystery • Plot: Crime or mysterious events and clues leading to a resolution • Setting: Could be crime scene, detective agency, creepy house, haunting place • Characters: Detective, investigators, spies

  11. Biography, Autobiography, memoir *Bio: life *Graph: write *Auto: self *Memoir: memory • Biography: story of someone’s life, written by someone else • Autobiography: story of someone’s life, written by themselves • Memoir: a short account of the author’s experiences, written by themselves

  12. Informational • Purpose: provides information on a wide range of topics • Informs, educates, teaches about information • Nonfiction- a story of true facts • Science, crafts, sports, articles, social studies
