Poetry • Definition: shortened form of writing • Figurative Language: metaphor, simile, personification, idiom, hyperbole • Author’s expression of feelings and opinions • May follow a form or structure
Traditional Literature • Definition: stories passed down for generations by oral storytelling • Oral storytelling- stories told verbally • Legends, folktales, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, tall tales • Foundation for fantasy
Fantasy • Plot: hero’s journey/quest, often good vs. evil • Setting: often medieval, time travel, magical • Characters: Talking animals, mythical creatures, magical users
Science Fiction • Plot: Alien attacks/visits, time traveling, technology, important experiments (“gone wrong”) • Setting: Advanced technology-cities, spaceships, other solar system/galaxy, time travel • Characters: Mutants, robot, aliens, “mad” scientist, talking computer
