Mel Severns, Registrar Pages 32-36
Our Services Located in Founders Hall, we strive to serve the current students and alumni of MVNU by: • Maintaining academic records • Mid-term grades (FA & SP) and final grade reports emailed to students and view on web • Evaluating & applying transfer course credits • Counseling students on AP and CLEP scores (CLEP and AP must be applied during first year at MVNU – see booklet for required scores on pages 35 and 36)
Our Services (continued) • Completing loan deferment forms (mostly electronic now) and student insurance forms • Sending official transcripts upon signed written request – no fee required • Processing degree audits for students to keep them on track for completing a degree • Compiling traditional student graduation lists
Earning a degree at MVNU • Read the Catalog (web edition) – changes occur every year • Minimum of 124 earned semester hours to receive a Bachelor’s degree; 64 for Associate’s degree 1) General Core – see booklet 2) Major Requirements 3) Minor Requirements 4) Electives if needed • Average of 31 hours per year – 14-3-14. In some terms students may need an overload or consider a summer or online course. • Full load is 15 in FA & SP; 4 in JA – Overloads must be approved at a fee of $552.00 per hour.
Miscellaneous NOTE: ENG0083 (Preparatory English), MAT0083 (Basic Algebra), and MAT0093 (Algebra) do NOT count toward the 124 earned hours required for graduation, but do count toward g.p.a. This may prolong the stay at MVNU unless the student takes max loads a few terms or summer courses. All other MVNU courses are credit bearing unless the course is for 0 credit.
Transfer Students • Your child’s MVNU academic advisor will have a copy of transfer courses we accepted. We also tell the student: “Make sure you do not repeat something you have already taken at another institution.” • Final evaluation of courses applied to major and/or minor is determined by Department Chair. • Quarter Hours vs. Semester Hours 5=3.33 4=2.67 3=2 2=1.33 1=.67 (1QTR hr = 2/3 SEM hr)
Summer Courses/Mail/On-line • Students may take courses at another institution and transfer them to MVNU, but it must be approved in writing prior to taking the course • Very common during the summer, especially for longer degree programs (Do not recommend during academic year)
Grade Requirements & Major • Grade Requirements – see grading scale chart on p. 33 • C- in major, but 2.0 overall in major (C – 1.7) (Note: Some majors require minimum grade of C) • D in minor or general core (D=1.0) • 2.0 minimum g.p.a. to graduate • Notice that we do not have A+ or D- in grading scale • Undecided and Change of Major/Minor • Many students are undecided and its okay! Over time students will decide and then declare a major. Undecided students take a Career Planning course in first year – taught by Career Counselor
Registering for Classes What will happen today in the “Class Scheduling” rotation? • Students meet in room together and discuss class scheduling in general • Break out and meet with advisor by academic major area (based upon student’s response to us). • Input courses on computer and print out for student to take home. NOTE: Most students have been pre-scheduled. Changes to a course are okay and may be necessary. We are here all summer if changes need to be made.
MVNU Email Account • At MVNU email is our primary means of communication to students. Therefore, please encourage your child to use the “@mvnu.edu” email account we assign to them in order not to miss something important. • Managing email is a skill that we often overlook. Examples of email communication: course registration dates, confirmation dates, graduation announcements, etc.
FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act • Once a student is 18 years old or enters MVNU, they have rights to their records that may or may not be privy to the parents. • We can only speak with you about specific educational records if we have written permission from the student.
Advice for Parents • Facebook, MySpace, etc. • Instant Messaging • Text Messaging • Video Games • Movies – DVD’s
