So much is happening • The pituitary gland is stimulated by the maturing hypothalamus and produces hormones • Growth spurt in synaptic connections and pruning • Frontal lobes not fully mylenated, still poor cognitive control over emotions • Sleep patterns change • Moods are intense and difficult to regulate • Self-focus • Critical attitude • Abstract thinking begins to develop

Culture and Identity Development • Book does a poor job exploring that people of non-majority contend with oppression, internalized hatred for own group, rejection, limited opportunities to explore, and several identity processes occurring at one time that are often not supported by society. Book does not speak to the additional struggles of GBLT who may have to have separate identities in different situations. Book does not even address those with disabilities.

What can therapists do? • Expand and support opportunities to explore where appropriate • Support commitments • Remember to assess benefit of foreclosure and assess ego strength, support and cl goals prior to introducing exploration • Do not disengage from adolescents or give too much power
What can therapists do? • Support perspective taking, responsible decision making, and critical thinking • Remember that adolescents test extremes to find their choices- normalize and help them to integrate. Help them to look at gradients in choices • Remember that while within group differences can outweigh between group differences- society discriminates as a whole, effecting each individual
