US managed to persuade the rest of the countries to support the war in Iraq. After a year of escalating violence, stability and democracy in Iraq are as far away as ever. Meanwhile, corporations such as Haliburton, continue to profit from lucrative reconstruction contracts. • Lipservice to morality and justice masks the hegemonic politics of war, control and big business. • From the perspective of the G8 countries, harmful effects on development are harmful on their business interests and investments. Their goal is to ensure that national resources are used in a way that is favorable to them. • The G8 identified Africa as the region with great development potential. Africa has a wealth of exploitable natural resources and potentially huge market for consumer items. The instability of the region needs to be underpinned by force. • Our shared goal is to help combat the harmful effects on development when national resources and revenues are misused.
