Personal Risk • Two Rules in Risk Taking • Never pursue risk, avoid it. • The only risk you can take is a calculated one • Places a high value on life • Risks taken can only be taken to improve the quality of life… • Or to save a life • Risks taken for Ideals • Ensure that their accomplishments will improve mankind

  4. Personal Risk • Types of Inexcusable Risks • Risk By Ignorance • Risk By Overconfidence • Risk for the Sake of Risk Itself

  5. Public Risk • Risks taken that affect the Public • Life should not be calculated as an expenditure or a loss • Too often risksare taken to increase profits • Nuclear Power Plants • DDT and other pesticides • Limiting of vehicle exhaust in Europe

  6. Public Risk • Too often risks are taken without informing the public • Hydrogen bubble at a nuclear power plant • The Radiation form the Bakini Bomb tests

Environmental Issues • Pollution of the Oceans • “Where did we [Humans] even get the idea in the first place that we have to ask whether we should save the environment or not” • Saccage • Manmade altering of marine habitats • Destruction of Coral Reefs • Building of Harbors and Marinas • Dredging operations

  8. More Environmental Issues • Overfishing • Approximately 20 percent of fisheries gone • Advanced technology, fewer fish. • Cousteau suggested solutions, not just presented problems • Showed people how beautiful the oceans were, with films

  9. Humanity and Science • Scientists used to be motivated by a desire to explore • Now they are trained monkeys that bring the coconuts down form the tree when asked • Scientists should use science for the benefit of Humanity, not financial or prestige reasons

  10. The Hot Peace • Staunchly opposed any kind of Nuclear Energy or Weapons • Nations viewed them as a measuring stick • Epitome of science for evil • Does not encourage peace • Too easy for terrorists • Suggested we use them against meteors threatening earth
