  2. Introduction • The sixties were a time of change. The psychedelic 60s as it was called changed the course of history. Many things were tried and invented. Things like drugs, rock-n-roll, and many types of fashion. As well as the Vietnam war, civil rights movement, and the assassinations of political leaders.

  4. Address to the Nation • President Nixon said that war is a horrible experience for a nation so he wanted to raise the number of withdrawals from the Vietnam War. In June of 1969 he announced a withdrawal of 25,000 men. By May 1st almost half of the troops in Vietnam were brought home.

  5. The Freedom of Speech Movement • Student protest about the ban on on-campus political activities. They set up info tables on campus and were soliciting donations for civil rights causes. It started at the Berkeley campus and was a pivotal movement for the civil liberties in The Sixties

  10. Drugs • LSD • Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) helped make the sixties what it was. LSD let people look at things with the different angle their psychedelic trance • Marijuana • During the sixties, as people were trying to find new ways to explore pleasure and ways of bringing it about, marijuana became an obvious choice • Magic mushrooms • During the sixties, many people experimented with mushrooms in addition to other, stronger psychedelics to help them get a new perspective on their world

  13. Economics • In the 1960s housing and computer industry overpowered automobiles, chemicals, and electrically powered consumer durables. In 1962 the five largest industrial corporations accounted for over 12 percent of all assets in manufacturing. GM had larger incomes than all the farms in the U.S.

  15. Anti-War Movement • A mass movement that began as an opposition to the Vietnam War. It was based on the 1950s peace movement. By the mid 1960s it centered on the universities and churches. People started to avoid the draft, and the voter age limits were challenged by the phrase, “If you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough to vote.”
