  6. Academics of Third Grade Word Study Using sight word assessments and Words Their Way spelling program, we will explore a variety of spelling patterns and rules, both in isolation and in context. Cursive Handwriting New this year, using the Handwriting Without Tears program. Why teach cursive? It’s faster because the pencil is always on the paper. It is through all of these components that grammar, parts of speech, figurative language (idioms, similes, and metaphors), and punctuation are covered.

  7. How to Help with All Homework in Third Grade • Help Foster Excellent Work Habits • Neatness Counts • Work in a quiet area where there are minimal distractions • Use Resources and Tools from Notebooks • Check your work: Name?, Class #?, Date?, Spelling?, Punctuation?, Math labels?

  8. How to Help with Reading Homework in Third Grade Answer questions with complete sentences. EX: Who is the main character in the story? The main character in the story is Robert Hayes York. Respond to reading in complete sentences. Use evidence from the reading. EX: My prediction is that Bo will yell at Robbie and maybe push him down. I think this because in the book, Bo yelled at Robbie on the bus. He also made fun of Mary Jacobs and he ruined Sarah Jane Manila’s sweater. In Notebook, write book title and author on top of the page before writing entries.

  9. How to Help with Writing Homework in Third Grade Use tools in Notebooks Verbalize a plan. Ask your child to retell his or her story to you before writing. Reread after the story is written and give feedback: “Be a Detective!” Vary word choice EX: said, replied, asked great, amazing, splendid Vary sentences, changing the beginnings Capitalization, Spelling, Punctuation

  10. How to Help with Math Homework in Third Grade Show all work Box out or underline important key words Use labels if needed words, abbreviations (inches, square units) , symbols ($) EX: How many more students voted for apples than oranges? 9-3= 6 students Circle your signs (+ - x ÷)
