Thousands gathered for a rally to demand an arrest in the fatal shooting last month of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman said he was acting in self-defense. Zimmerman has not been charged in the case, which has sparked outrage in Florida. Martin was unarmed when he was shot and killed.
In Other News • Three white men (DerylDedmon, 19; John Rice, 19; and Dylan Butler, 20) pleaded guilty Thursday to federal hate crime charges stemming from the horrific June 2011 murder of a 47-year-old black Mississippi man who was beaten and then run over by a pickup truck. About 5 a.m., according to court documents, the suspects encountered Anderson in a motel parking lot, where they severely beat him. Rice and Butler, according to court documents, were the first to leave the scene, driving away in a Jeep from which one of them yelled, "White power!“ Dedmon and two others then got into a Ford F-250 truck and ran over Anderson, killing him, according to court documents. • Though North Korea's nuclear program isn't on the official agenda of next week's Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, President Obama's concerns about the regime will loom large in conversations on the sidelines of formal talks. • Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder and various other charges, including attempted murder, in connection with the March 11 attack on Afghan civilians. He stands accused of shooting and stabbing members of several families in a nighttime ambush. At least nine victims were children and some others were women. Several sources said 16 people were killed, though some also said the number could be higher.
