China: At a Glance • Population: 1.3 Billion - (1/5 of the world’s inhabitants) • GDP: $1.65 Trillion (9.5% growth compared to U.S. growth of 4.4%) • Per Capita GDP exceeded $1,000 for first time in 2003 • GDP by sector agriculture: 13.8% industry: 52.9% services: 33.3% • Higher education: In 1997, university enrollment in “regular higher education” stood at 3.2 million; by 2000, it had risen to 7 million. The Ministry of Education plans to have 16 million enrolled by 2010 (including distance and continuing education).

In Sum • Three agreements signed: Shandong University, Xi’an International Studies University (signed prior to arrival) Chang’an University • 22 agreements with China dating back to 1988 • They all welcome follow-up visits • Need better data on exchanges, countries, targets • Need to expand alumni base • Good timing
