Choose an Audience • Where is the need for STEM Programs? • High school students? • Adults? • Audience should determine curriculum and location
Selecting a Curriculum • What does your audience want to learn? • Use a pre-survey • Keep it simple & easy to follow • practice problems or do-it-yourself activities • Hands on and engaging • Be engaging • Hands on Activities in class retains students • Check the TORCH website or ask for more ideas
Selecting a location • Convenient for your audience • Is it easily accessed by them? • Convenient for your volunteers • Close to campus? • Close to public transportation? • Do many members have cars? • Look into community centers and your campus resources • Free! • Community
Volunteer Recruiting & Training • Encourage participation • Not every volunteer has to lead a class • Aim for low student: teacher ratio • Host an orientation session • Meet on campus & travel together • CORI/SORI Checks may be necessary • Send all volunteers see syllabus & lesson plans

Informal Science & Engineering Fair • Choose venue & date (FRC) • Work with youth program for attendees • Select activities based on age group • Can be completed quickly • Mixture of try once & take homes • Include demonstrations if possible • Recruit volunteers
