TRAITS • Viruses are extremely small and come in many different sizes. (round, rod shaped, bricklike, threadlike, bulletlike, robotlike) • Viruses are NOT made of cells • Viruses do NOT grow and respond to changes in the environment • Viruses CAN reproduce only inside living things
What Is A Virus? • A Virus Is A Disease Causing Organism. • A Virus Has Two Basic Parts: • A Protein Coat • A Strand of DNA Within The Protein Coat
What Does A Virus Look Like? Viruses don’t all have the same shape. The Following Slides Have Some Examples.
What Types of Diseases Are Caused By Viruses? • Rabies • Flu • Measles • Mumps • Chicken Pox • Ebola • Polio • Herpes • HIV • Hepatitis B
BODY CONTROL ANTIBODIES – FLAG THE VIRUS INTERFERON – NATURAL RESPONSE OF BODY / INHIBITS REPLICATON OF THE VIRUS WHITE BLOOD CELLS – DESTROY THE VIRUS VACCINES – A WEAK OR DEAD FORM OF THE VIRUS WHICH STIMULATES CHEMICALS TO BE PRODUCES TO DESTROY THE VIRUS. THE BODY THEN “REMEMBERS” THE VIRUS IF EVER INFECTED AGAIN!
LIFE CYCLE OF VIRUS • A VIRUS ATTACHES TO THE SURFACE OF A BACTERIA/CELL • THE VIRUS INJECTS ITS GENETIC MATERIAL INTO THE BACTERIA/CELL • THE VIRUS’S GENETIC MATERIAL TAKES OVER THE CELL’S FUNCTION. THE CELL STARTS TO PRODUCE THE VIRUS’S PROTEIN AND GENETIC MATERIAL. • THE PROTEINS AND GENETIC MATERIAL ASSEMBLE INTO NEW VIRUSES. • THE BACTERIA/CELL BURSTS OPEN, RELEASING THE VIRUS. THE VIRUS GOES AND INFECTS OTHER CELLS.
Virus of the Day #1 • Ebola
What is Ebola? • Ebola is a disease humans get from infected animals and animal materials. • Ebola can be transmitted through direct contact or simply breathing the virus in from the air. • It causes severe bleeding abnormalities. • Ebola is found only in parts of Africa. • 90% of people who get Ebola die. • Most deaths occur within one week of getting the virus.
What symptoms do people with Ebola have? • Early on they have vomiting, diarrhea, and are fatigued. • Later symptoms include: eye inflammation, general rash, bleeding from mouth, ears, eyes, nose and rectum.
How Is Ebola Treated? • There is no known cure for Ebola at this time. • The only thing that can be done is to try to treat the pain and stop the massive bleeding.
How Do You Avoid Getting the Ebola Virus? • Avoid Areas of Outbreaks. • You Must Wear Gown, Gloves and Masks Around Patients.
