Who are we? SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
What are we suggesting? Mapping of cultural-natural routes/sites in the BR SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
And why are we suggesting it? SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 1: Identify key actors and get them together • Stakeholders analysis in order to identify key actors / target group (farmers, business owners, service providers, crafters, tourist operators, local communities, park directorate, decision-makers, etc.) • Stakeholders mapping; on-site surveys about their needs and interest; social media; communication about the BR within the local communities; • Gather them on a Networking meeting + invite experts with relevant experience (ex. Apenino Tosco Emiliano) • Goal of the meeting: To inform and motivate the main stakeholders to engage in the promotion of the BR + identify their needs SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 2: Networking Meeting • Introduction about MaB, BRs and Sustainable Tourism • Experience sharing (local and regional level) – invite experts to talk about what are the benefits and opportunities related to BRs • Possibilities for project replications and joint initiatives + introduce BR and Sustainable tourism networks (IUCN Green List, Beautiful Destination, DESTIMED, GreenBelt Farms, etc.) • Present the project idea: mapping cultural-natural routes in the BR • Define and split into working groups according to their interest / sectors + initiate discussion and conduct SWOT analysis on the project idea Next steps: Road map for the implementation of the project + monitoring and evaluation SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 3: Empower the locals through the BR SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 4: Develop an Interactive Map / Network • Focus on story telling and BRs logo as a common framework – give a face to the destination / build identity • Emphasize local products and places + New branding logo SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 4: Develop an Interactive Map / Network • Brainstorm about pricing and details • Innovative tools: panorama routes (with frames), augmented reality, virtual reality, etc. Virtual Reality Nature: Helmet Lets Humans See the Forest Like Animals Do SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 4: Develop an Interactive Map / Network • Routes diversification (different colors and logos) + explore new activities like canyoning, mountain biking, running, cooking with mushrooms, make your own perfume, etc. • Etno-gastronomy, culture and traditions route (ex: wine and cheese tours or crafts and culture tours) • Nature, sport and adventure route SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 5: Commit to the BR • Friends of the BR Charter • Develop criteria together with the key stakeholders – not too complicated criteria, so that we can attract more businesses and services • Engage the municipalities/decision-makers to develop benefits for the Friends of the BR • People who do not commit to the Charter, won’t be included in the Interactive Map/Network • Use the “I care Apenino” example to develop a project brand – support the BR • Develop specific pricing – certain % of the profit to go directly for the BR promotion and activities (or when the company starts benefiting from the BR, they should give % of their profit for the BR) SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
Step 6: PROMOTION and COMMUNICATION • Website and social media • Newspapers and local media • Promotional videos (example) • Famtrips • MAB network • Study tours (exchange of experiences between professionals of other BRs) • School visits • Events (festivals, conferences, etc.) • Physical infopoints and English brochures • Influencers, travel bloggers, etc. SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON “INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND PROMOTION OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES” Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria, July 2019
