SAB Sponsor Report Tyde Richards Learning Technology Standards Committee (C/LT) 11/7/13
IEEE LTSC Status • LTSC relaunch • New P&Ps, officers, Web site • Lifecycle approach to interoperability • Traditional standards • RAMLET WG13, SC36 Liaison • Technical Reports • Non-standards produced by TAGs • Exploratory R&D • IEEE Actionable Data Book
RAMLET (WG13) • Multipart standard • Resource aggregation ontology • Format mappings into ontology • Goal: lossless format translation • WG13 the only active LTSC WG • “RAMLET Methodology” Strategic • May be applied to other domains • Semantic approach to big data • SC36 interest in progressing
RAMLET Status • 1484.13.1-2012 (Core Ontology) • 1484.13.2 (METS) • Balloted – 12/13 RevCom consideration • 1484.13.3 (MPEG-21) -- Part 2: Digital • Balloted – 12/13 RevCom consideration • 1484.13.4 (IMS CP) • PAR extension requested • 1484.13.5 (Atom) • Approved 10/13 prepublication • 1484.13.6 (OAI-ORE) • Final WG draft, PAR extension pending
ISO-IEC JTC1 SC36 Liaison • Dialog with SC36 since formation (2000) • Category A Liaison since ~2008 • Past redundancy in some areas • Metadata: IEEE LOM, SC36 MLR • Current constructive dialog in some areas • Digital content, eTextbooks, IEEE RAMLET, competency definitions • SC36 no longer has US NB • Desirable for liaison to attend annual SC36 Plenary
TAGs and Technical Reports • LTSC P&Ps updated to allow Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) • Patterned after LANMAN TAGs • Intent to enable experts to produce technical reports, not standards, that are publically available by light-weight process • Currently in discussion for pilot TAG • Experiment to boost LTSC membership
IEEE Actionable Data Book • Formed late 2012 at request of WG11 • R&D activity under IEEE IC program • Evaluate EPUB 3 (HTML5) as next gen basis for learning delivery platform • Weekly meetings, good participation • Deliverables • Architecture, UNESCO use case, cloud data api, IoT, IEEE GHTC workshop, W3C/IDPF EDUPUB workshop • Strategically positioned on strategic problem • ADB project is, opportunity for IEEE in general to be for eBooks and learning content • Planned move to LTSC sponsorship in December
