What is Sisters Network® Inc. and Sisters Network Indianapolis? • The leading voice and only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States • Founded in 1994 and now has over 40 affiliate chapters across the United States, run by breast cancer survivors • At the core of the Sisters Network mission is support, outreach and education • The Indianapolis Affiliate chapter, Sisters Network Indianapolis, was founded in 2007 • Sisters Network Indianapolis holds monthly meetings at the Cancer Support Community, 5150 W. 71st St. • Meetings offer patients, survivors and caregivers an opportunity to receive information about breast cancer issues and resources for assistance and to fellowship with other survivors
What is the Gift for Life Block Walk®? • A national educational outreach initiative of Sisters Network® Inc., implemented by affiliate chapters • Affiliate chapters collaborate with organizations, community groups and volunteers to promote breast health awareness in the African American community • Breast cancer survivors partner with registered teams to walk door-to-door to distribute breast health information and resource materials in a selected neighborhood and to invite residents to a health fair and block party that takes place after the Block Walk. • The health fair and block party is held at the Block Walk host site. Activities include free mammograms, breast exams and other health screenings, fitness exhibitions, live entertainment, prostate cancer workshop, vendors, food and children activities • The 2013 Block Walk is on Saturday, September 21st. The host site is the Martin Luther King Community Center, 40 W. 40th St.
