  1. What makes a faith attractive to various groups of people? • How are religions modified and changed as they are lived out in real social life and how do they adapt to changing circumstances? • How do religions change as they adapt to new cultural settings? • How do messages of non-violence and compassion change when universal religions become state-sponsored faiths? • How do religions borrow from one another and integrate the new forms into their own faiths?

  2. Ideas of Universal Religions • Morality-based; often promise salvation • Explain suffering and evil • Written texts and missionaries help spread the religion to many different peoples • Adaptable to changing times and places • Teachings considered valid for all people • Bring order and harmony to society – the “carrot” to go with the “stick” of government • Develop symbiotic relationships with government

  3. What changes in society gave rise to Universal Religions with a personal savior and a promise of eternal life? What attracts people to universal religions? Why at this time and on so large a scale?

  4. What are some political, economic and social reasons for conversion? What characteristics would make a religion more likely to gain governmental support?

  5. Why does a religion change and adapt? What are some of the limits to adaptability? Why prevented Hinduism and Confucianism from becoming “universal”?
