The Social Injustice In child marriages, the social injustice is forcing children to be used as bribes or offerings in marriage. This injustice really affects the child being forced to marry someone. In Afghanistan, more than 57 percent of all marriages involve girls under 16
Lila Lila is a 12 year old girl who was constantly beaten by her 17 year old husband. His reasons to beat her included him being in love with another girl, but forced to marry Lila. Lila was forced to marry him so that her brother could have the freedom to choose who he marries
Lila’s Incident Lila attempted suicide by lighting herself on fire, and almost died. She ended up in Howzawi hospital in critical condition for the severity of her burns. She admits afterwards “I burned myself so that I could relax forever”
Effects Of Child Marriage • Since 2002, over 400 people in the province, most being young girls, have set themselves on fire in a suicide attempt • 60 percent of all these victims have died from the severity of the injuries • Overall, 40 percent of a nearby hospital, Istiqlal, is dedicated to burn victims
