Spiritually-divided marriages 1 Corinthians 7:12-24
1 Cor. 7:12-16 12 But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not leave her. 13 Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not leave her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is set apart for God by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is set apart for God by the husband. Otherwise your children would be corrupt, but now they are set apart for God. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let
1 Cor. 7:12-16 him leave. A brother or a sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace. 16 For you, wife, how do you know whether you will save your husband? Or you, husband, how do you know whether you will save your wife?

How is the unbeliever “set apart for God” by the believer? Seems like he is saying there are 2 ways to be saved…
How is the unbeliever “set apart for God” by the believer? Seems like he is saying there are 2 ways to be saved… 1 Peter 3:1-2 In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live 2 when they observe your pure, reverent lives. • Principle = unbelieving spouses & children are set apart for spiritual influence via the presence of a believer within their family
How does this happen? • PRAY!!! (alone & with others) • Make Christ visible • 1 Peter 2:2323 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. • Abide in Christ • Get around more light together • Don’t be afraid to talk honestly • Submit to Christ, not to false peace

1 Cor. 7:17-24 17 However, each one must live his life in the situation the Lord assigned when God called him. This is what I command in all the churches. 18 Was anyone already circumcised when he was called? He should not undo his circumcision. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? He should not get circumcised. 19 Circumcision does not matter and uncircumcision does not matter, but keeping God’s commands does. 20 Each person should remain in the life situation in which he was
1 Cor. 7:17-24 called. 21 Were you called while a slave? It should not be a concern to you. But if you can become free, by all means take the opportunity. 22 For he who is called by the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called as a free man is Christ’s slave. 23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brothers, each person should remain with God in whatever situation he was called.

Principle #1 – Don’t be a runner!

What do I do if my spouse is a stagnant believer? • PRAY!!! (alone & with others) • Make Christ visible • Abide in Christ • Get around more light together • Aggressively seek input into your marriage from other trusted believers • Don’t be afraid to talk honestly • Submit to Christ, not to false peace
What if we are just rowing in different directions? Ephesians 5:22-33-- 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, 23 for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so wives are to submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless. 28 In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, 30 since we are members of His body…33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.
Ephesians 5:22-33 Principle #1 – The husband is to be the spiritual head of the home. Are you recoiling at this? • We despise & shrink back from all authority • We are confused about what it means to be the head of the home… • Not authoritarian rule • Not perfectionism • Not without accountability
Ephesians 5:22-33 Principle #2 – Christ is the model of spiritual leadership. • Self-giving & others-centered • Willing to endure temporal suffering for long-term joy • Delights in pleasing the Father Key Point – the husband does not have to be older or even more mature in the Lord to lead
Ephesians 5:22-33 Principle #3 – The wife is to respect & submit to her husband’s godly leadership. • Not belittling husband’s attempts at leadership • Not comparing your husband’s style of godly leadership with another husband’s • Not being a silent, passive partner • Called to challenge husband with truth & grace • Should voice what you are seeing & hearing from the Lord
Key Application… • If the husband is really striving to lead as Christ does (as best he can)… • And if you are both seeking the Lord individually & together… • And if you are both expressing your heart’s desire, concerns, & vision… • Then, if it is still unclear how the Lord is leading, I believe the Scriptures call the husband to lead out…and the wife to follow…
