2. Project Vision • Commit to purchasing and using renewable energy. • 3 Major Aspects • The vision of the project was to create a renewable energy micro grid • Have the Borough purchase wind energy and committed to SMART Initiative • Explore energy efficiency projects that reduce consumption

3. What we did • Bought wind energy for 30% of our Borough accounts. • Convinced Delaware County Government to follow our lead and purchase wind energy for their borough owned properties. • Wrote an Energy Harvest Grant in 2002, for the start of the micro-grid project.

4. Key Aspects • Find a renewable energy expert/installer of solar energy systems. • Trust their review of the building potential. • Have realistic expectations of the project. • Commit to cost sharing at least 50% of the capital costs of the project. • Baseline the environmental benefits of the project.

5. Partner • Find a renewable energy partner that has experience in municipal government projects. • The partner should be able to do energy efficiency analysis for additional savings. • Let them do their analysis with minimal involvement.

6. Grant Writing • Clearly define your objective as a community. • Define commitments can you make and keep. • Clear concise grants that identify the environmental impacts like carbon emissions, number of cars taken off the road etc help the reviewers.

7. Energy Harvest Media Borough • 1st Award 2003 $15,925 for solar on 1 adaptive reuse building. • 2nd Award 2004 $94,245 for 5 additional buildings and educational kiosk • 3rd Award 2006 $77,000 for 3 additional buildings • Total grant funds received $320,000 for Solar Energy for Media Project

9. Environmental Benefits • Will reduce carbon emissions by 120,400 lbs per year. • Will reduce 168lbs of nitrous oxides per yr • Will reduce 666lbs of sulfur dioxide yr. • Is the equivalent of planting 10 acres of mature trees annually.

Dollar savings estimated to be at least $10,688.00 annually – and the Borough can sell energy back to a supplier at $0.20 per kilowatt while buying it at a cheaper rate (50% of the current bill), because there are no distribution charges.
