Sample Scenario: An entrepreneur is interested in opening a day care center in NM. She is trying to find out what information is available (and how to get to it) that can help her understand this industry, develop a business plan, and identify a good place to locate her business. What can we provide her?
A Census Bureau Econ Data Primer • Establishments vs. Companies • Most data collected at the establishment basis • Employer Businesses vs. Nonemployers • Most programs just cover employers • Privacy • U.S. Code Title 13 results in suppression of data • Business Classification • NAICS • Economic Geographies • National, state, county, place, and ZIP Code • Surveys vs. the Economic Census • More current = less detailed
What’s Available? The Industry Statistics Portal identifies the programs at the Census Bureau that provide data on a user selected industry that this entrepreneur might be able to use. • To access the ISP from www.census.gov: • Click Business or • Place your cursor on Business and select Data by Industry
Show Me Some Info… TheIndustry Snapshots (which are accessible from theIndustry Statistics Portal) present selected key statistics for an industry in a simple profile.
Narrow My Search… Using data from Census Bureau programs like County Business Patternscan help our entrepreneur identify potential counties in New Mexico that she might consider opening her new day care center in.

No surprise that social assistance services make up 64% of day care center receipts/revenue in NM… …but government contributions, gifts, and grants is the second largest source of revenue at 17% Of the total social assistance services revenue, day care services account for 56%, while programs make up 6% and other services make up the remaining 2%
