  3. Sample Scenario: An entrepreneur is interested in opening a day care center in NM. She is trying to find out what information is available (and how to get to it) that can help her understand this industry, develop a business plan, and identify a good place to locate her business. What can we provide her?

A Census Bureau Econ Data Primer • Establishments vs. Companies • Most data collected at the establishment basis • Employer Businesses vs. Nonemployers • Most programs just cover employers • Privacy • U.S. Code Title 13 results in suppression of data • Business Classification • NAICS • Economic Geographies • National, state, county, place, and ZIP Code • Surveys vs. the Economic Census • More current = less detailed

The Industry Statistics Portal identifies the programs at the Census Bureau that provide data on a user selected industry that this entrepreneur might be able to use. • To access the ISP from www.census.gov: • Click Business or • Place your cursor on Business and select Data by Industry

What else is available? • Using the data from the Product Linesfile for this industry (available from theEconomic Census) can help an entrepreneur: • understand the products and services typically provided by other businesses like hers, and • Predict the potential sales of these products she might expect • The other types of data available from the Economic Census can help her understand other aspects of her industry

No surprise that social assistance services make up 64% of day care center receipts/revenue in NM… …but government contributions, gifts, and grants is the second largest source of revenue at 17% Of the total social assistance services revenue, day care services account for 56%, while programs make up 6% and other services make up the remaining 2%
