  1. 50 Most Interesting Birds Birds Adapted to live on every continent and in every ocean. Mrs. Trotter’s Science Class

  2. Gizzards • Birds don’t chew their food • They don’t have teeth, right? • Instead they swallow small pebbles, bits of eggshells, and other hard things • It goes into a muscular organ called the gizzard

  3. once in the gizzard, seeds that the bird eats will be ground up into pieces

  4. Finger Licking Good?

  5. Endotherms • They maintain a constant body temperature • feathers • as the feathers grow they may fall out • a new feather will grow in its place • oil glands- the bird will use its beak to “preen” itself this mean they use their beak to spread the oil to coat their feathers.

  6. Amniotic Eggs • hard shells • a moist, protective environment for the embryo to develop • The shell is made of calcium carbonate (the same mineral that makes up seashells) • The eggs are fertilized internally before the shell actually forms around it

  7. Fried Eggs Anyone?

  8. Flight • hollow bones • wings • feathers • strong flight muscles • efficient respiratory system • well developed senses, especially eyesight Heard of an Eagle Eye?

  9. Hollow Bones • Most bones are joined to together for more strength and stability • The actually bone itself is hollow and filled with air

  10. Feathers • two main types of feathers • contour- strong lightweight, give a bird its coloring and smooth shape • down – soft fluffy and provide an insulating layer

  11. Wings • Not all birds fly- but most do • Wings provide an upward force called lift for the bird to fly • humans copied this design to make airplanes

  12. Body Systems • Digestive System- needs lots of energy so they eat high energy foods like nuts, seeds, fruit, insects (crop, stomach, gizzard, intestines) • Respiratory System- Air flows in only one direction. The bird gets oxygen while inhaling AND exhaling. This gives them a constant air supply • Circulatory System- Heart, capillaries, arteries and veins circulate the blood very quickly

  13. Importance • They help control pests • pollinate flowers • disperse seeds • pets • food ( meat & eggs) • feathers useful • droppings used as fertilizer Watch
