How did the Industrial Revolution affect the population of the U.S.? Notes #30
During the Industrial Revolution, many Americans moved to cities for factory jobs, which resulted in an increase of the urban middle class.
At the same time, the U.S. government placed few limits on immigration because it wanted to ensure that there would be workers for factory jobs.
New immigrants came to the U.S. from Southern and Eastern Europe, China, and Japan.
Most of these new immigrants settled in the industrial cities of the Northeast or the Midwest.
This unlimited immigration to the U.S. was mainly opposed by labor unions and nativists.
Pressures from these groups resulted in the U.S. government limiting immigration by the late 1800s.
Examples of the U.S. government limiting immigration included: the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Gentleman’s Agreement with Japan.
