CUBISM • One of the most influential art movements of the twentieth century. • Cubism was begun by Pablo Picasso (Spanish) and Georges Braque (French) in 1907 • A French art critic used the term "cubism“ in 1908 after seeing a picture by Braque. He described it as 'full of little cubes‘.Louis Vauxelles
Pablo Picasso (Spanish) Les Desmoiselles d Avignon
Characteristics of Cubism • Color was almost non-existent often included brown, grey, blue and ochre. • Color was not to detract viewer from the design. • Artists for the first time made images that were collaged (pasted) onto the canvas. • Paint was applied uniformly in small square brushstrokes creating vibrations of light & dark. • They used letters, fragments of words & musical notes. • They painted every day recognizable objects.
PURPOSE of Cubism • Cubist painters were not trying to copy forms, and space as they saw it but rather from multiple views at the same time. • Cubism purpose was to analyze and study an object by breaking it down and reassembling it in a new way.
Assignment #3 • Create a collaged drawing/painting in the style of cubism using every day still life objects as the subject matter. • Use a monochromatic color scheme. • Show multiple views of an object at the same time.
