  2. Speed-dating (let’s get to know each other) • Take 3 minutes per partner then move clockwise around the table • Questions: • Who are you? • Where and who do you teach? For how long? • What (if any) subject specializations do you have? • What is your favorite teaching method? • What was the last book you read?

  3. A Slow Start • Let’s look at some examples of basic or typical English phrases in the classroom • Discuss in small groups first then let’s come back together. • How do you expect to use English when teaching? Separate or integrated?

  4. Techniques and Tips • Songs • Habit formation and repetition • Phenomena-based teaching and holistic knowledge acquisition • Practical approach: learn the language so that it can be used!

  5. Language Perception (Quick Survey) • I feel satisfied with my accent when I speak English. • I feel like I can understand most of the English(es) that I hear. • I feel like I can be understood by most people when I speak English. • I feel that Finnish people (generally) speak English very well. • I feel that English’s presence is becoming too strong in Finland.

  6. CLIL studies • Content and Language Integrated Learning • CLIL-based teaching in conjunction with phenomenon-based learning? • Confidence in your English is key to successful language teaching, (NOT PERFECTION!)

  7. Second-language assessment • Teaching for the future. How do we set our students up for success? • The times they are a-changin’ • How does this affect our jobs? • How can we grow with them??? Write more

  8. Art and Storytelling • Let’s take a look at some works and art and talk about them! • Describe these pictures (setting, characters, emotions, colors) • Tell a story using the picture (what is happening, what will happen next…) • Can this type of exercise be modified for your classrooms?

  9. English-Learning Apps • Get into groups and search for apps and/or programs that facilitate language-learning • How can these be used in the classroom? Can we use these for our own development?

  10. Literature in Language teaching • Let’s look at poetry and children’s books! • One person reads it out loud to their partner. Is it easily understandable? • If we have time, let’s construct our own poems using the same structure

  11. Closing Thoughts • Questions, comments, thoughts… • Where do we go from here?

  12. Goals for Language-Learning • What is our own language-learning experience? • What do we want our students’ experience to be? • How has this situation changed over the years? • Relate this to the National Core Curriculum • Marjut will handle this
