Objectives • Identify the potential of mini cogeneration projects, mini wind projects and solar to be adopted at the residential level in Alberta. • Identify the barriers to this micro-generation and develop recommendations to minimize these barriers. • Specific project scoping to be carried out in the first weeks of the project.
Microgeneration definition • Broadly definition, based on delivery of energy services and includes generation of electricity and heat. • Both grid-connected and stand-alone technology options have been considered. • It was assumed to be any positive generation from zero to upper limits in the 1 MW for electricity generation and heating. • The study focuses on modular technologies that can be installed close to the point of demand. Why use microgeneration technologies • There is evidence that the competitive market structure created for the Alberta electricity market is producing benefits for many consumers. However, there has been less success in the small consumer market. • A significant proportion of electrical power is lost during transmission (approximately 7.5% in North America). Microgeneration does not incur in this loss. Also microgeneration reduces the transmission capacity requirement of the national grid, avoiding the need for additional grid upgrades. • Microgeneration conserves the relation better with the environment in comparison about the traditional technologies and help to develop hardly accessible areas and non rent areas for the traditional technologies. • Microgeneration can produce house and industrial costs reduction.
