Problems with the New York Gun Laws By: Haley Stein
Highlights • Sandy Hook Tragedy rushes Governor Cuomo to make a bill that bans pistol and rifle magazines that are over seven rounds as well as brings in stricter laws on assault weapons • In his haste to pass this bill he forgot to exempt all law enforcement officers which would make them all in violation of his new law • Most gun manufacturers do not even make a seven round magazine • The magazines that are already owned by citizens that are over seven rounds will now become illegal for them to own
Highlights • This has happened before in the Clinton years from the Brady Bill which had made magazines over ten rounds illegal to own, exempting law enforcement officers as well as those who owned the pre-banned magazines before the bill went into effect • All this did was increase the sales of pre-banned magazines and various assault rifles in the event of future banning • The Brady Law was done away with by President Bush and is no longer in effect
Highlights • For Governor Cuomo this was nothing more than him using a tragedy as a political stepping-stone to further his political ambitions • Governor Cuomo has created a scare in his state as well as increase the number of gun sales, magazine sales and the sales of ammo in his state for fear that it may not be available one day • In doing this more guns have been put on the streets that potential criminals could get their hands on
Highlights • This debate leads to the study of human nature and the anatomy of violence • Some feel that an assault rifle or pistol loaded with high caliber magazines just provide the assailant with more rounds before he has to reload. (Any modern firearm is easy to reload) • Vice President Joe Biden stated, “Women only need a shot gun to protect themselves.” • You can take a double barrel shot gun a keep shooting and reloading quickly because the mass majority of victims are in fear and running.
Highlights • During the era of Billy the Kid everybody basically had the same amount of fire power/guns but it did not change the crimes/heinous acts the outlaws did. • Billy the Kid was one of the deadliest gun slingers in U.S. history. He killed anywhere between 11 to 21 people • Billy the Kid became famous for these acts and has even been glorified in movies betrayals • These movies did nothing more than glorify Billy the Kid and make him into a legend
Highlights • Timothy Mcveigh was a homegrown terrorist who detonated a truck bomb • A notable quote from Wikipedia, “terrorist who detonated a truck bomb on an attack called the Oklahoma City Bombing, which was the deadliest terrorist attack within the U.S. before September 11, 2001.” • This goes back to the anatomy of the criminal mind and what makes a person do evil acts
Highlights • Every year people are murdered due to blunt force trauma with an object or by the hands of another rather than a handgun • The criminals who carry a gun or felons who carry a gun could really careless about how many bullets they have • If they are willing to take a life why would they care about an additional weapons violation charge?
Highlights Lessons to be learned here that for the same amount of time and money spent on researching and advertising/marketing his bill, Governor Cuomo could have simply put forth an aggressive campaign and put the same money into enforcing, prosecuting, and holding criminals accountable for their actions and making New York a safer place to live.
Closing Highlights It is time people are held accountable for their actions and the era of entailment ended. There used to be a saying “don’t do the crime, if you can’t do the time” that is what we need to get back to, to send a message that we have had enough and if you do these acts you will be held accountable.
