Someone Like You Sarah Dessen Megan Short
Loyal Pg. 21 “So I reached over and pulled her to me, wrapping my arms around her, and held my best friend close, returning so many favors all at once… All I knew was that she needed me and I was here. And for now, that was about the best we could do.” Halley was always very loyal to Scarlett. She was always there when Scarlett needed to be comforted. In this quote, Halley is being a great friend and trying to calm Scarlett down by being there for her. No matter what, they were always there for each other.
Supportive Pg. 34-38 “We got to the church”… “Are you okay”… “It’s just weird.” “This is a bad idea”… she was staring at the back of the pew in front of us, her face pale. I looked over at her… “he loved you” I told her. Halley always supported Scarlett. Whenever Scarlett had a problem or situation where she couldn’t choose what to do, Halley was always there for her. She told her she would support her choice no matter what it was, even if no one else agreed. She was a great friend to Scarlett.
Trustworthy Pg. 95-97 “I need you,” Scarlett said to me… “What’s wrong?” She just shook her head. “What is it?”… As she held it out, I saw that in the little circle was a bright pink cross. Then all at once, it hit me. “No, no way.” She nodded.. “I’m pregnant.” Scarlett could always tell Halley anything and be able to trust that she wouldn’t tell anyone. No matter how good or bad something was she always told Halley everything. She could always count on her and it was great for her to have a friend like this, especially because of all the challenges she faced in the story.
Event #1 Pg. 3-21 “He’s dead.” Scarlett’s voice was flat, even… “Can you come home?”… “I’m on my way.”… All I knew was that she needed me and I was here. And for now that was about the best we could do. This is when Scarlett called Halley and told her that Michael had died. Michael was Scarlett’s boyfriend. This was the main conflict because it sets up everything for the rest of the story. This event shows how Halley is loyal and supportive to Scarlett. It shows a change in Halley because usually Scarlett is the brave one comforting Halley but now Halley has to step up a be the best friend she can be.
Event #2 Pg. 95-97 “I need you,” Scarlett said to me… “What’s wrong?” She just shook her head. “What is it?”… As she held it out, I saw that in the little circle was a bright pink cross. Then all at once, it hit me. “No, no way.” She nodded.. “I’m pregnant.”… “It’ll be okay,” I said in my most confident voice. “We can handle this. “Halley, I miss him so much.” “I know, it’ll be okay Scarlett. Everything is going to be fine.” But even as I said it, I was scared. This was a major conflict in the story. Scarlett found out that she was pregnant with Michael’s baby, but Michaelwas dead. She was very stressed out and didn’t know what to do. Halley was there to support her and talk to her about all her problems. She gave her suggestions about what she should do. It shows a change in Halley’s personality because she now has to be brave and help someone else think and get through their problems.
Event #3 Pg. 272-278 “Scarlett, hold it together.”… “I can’t do this.”… “Well that’s too bad… you are the only one she wants,” my mother said… No matter how strong or weak I was, she was a part of me, as crucial as my own heart. I would never be strong enough, in all my life, to do without her… “It’s a girl, she’s beautiful,” I told her. When I looked down, I was overwhelmed. She was our year, from the summer to the winter. We would never forget. This was after Scarlett had the baby. Even though all the other events in the story were bad, this one event was good. This showed Scarlett and Halley that you can have a good outcome out of something that seems so devastating. There summer had been very rough, but when Scarlett had the baby, it all seemed worth it. They realized that if they stuck together and supported each other, everything would be okay in the end.
