Group 4 Day Wednesday May 11th
Aims of IB Science courses • To provide a body of knowledge to stimulate and challenge students • Challenge students to analyze and evaluate scientific information • Develop an appreciation of the limitation of scientific knowledge
Aims of IB Science Courses • Develop technology skills • Encourage an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of science • Encourage effective communication and collaboration • Develop experimental and investigative skills
Assessment of IB Science Courses • Assessment includes both external and internal assessment • External assessment is an exam at the end of the two year period of study • Internal assessment is the practical, hands-on portion of each science course
Philosophy of Internal Assessment • Allows for the development of practical skills within a scientific discipline • Scientific knowledge is experimentally generated • Develops an appreciation of benefits and limitations of scientific knowledge
Assessment of IB Science Courses • Group IV project falls within the internal assessment aspect. • IT IS THE ONLY PART OF YOUR IB SCIENCE COURSE WHERE PERSONAL SKILLS ARE ASSESSED – SO DON’T BE ABSENT!!!
Philosophy of the Group IV Project • Component of the IA of IB science courses • Focus is on the PROCESS, not final results • Hands-on practical experience • Interdisciplinary group activity • Conducted over 10 hours
Philosophy of the group IV Project • Group 4 day is intended to “encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method”. • The emphasis is on interdisciplinary cooperation and the processes involved in scientific investigation, rather than the products of the investigation.
This years theme shares it’s name with • A famous 1969 Illinois R+B and funk Band with hits such as:- • Shining Star • That’s the way of the world • Can’t hide Love • Saturday nite
The Theme this year is • EARTH, WIND (air) and FIRE (and WATER)
This Year’s Theme • THE ELEMENTS, not the ones you find in the Periodic table of the Elements, but the CLASSICAL ELEMENTS, namely:- • EARTH • AIR • WATER • FIRE
Project stages • Planning, crucial to the whole exercise and should last around 2 hours. • In order to facilitate planning between group members we give you 2 opportunities to get together:- • Assembly time April 13th and April 27th
Aims of Assembly 1 • To meet the other members of your group • To brainstorm ideas for areas of investigation • To start the planning process • (We strongly suggest during this first meeting that you exchange contact details, we will expect for you to be able to show evidence of collaboration).
Aim of assembly 2 • Finalise investigations that you wish to perform. • Check with the teacher that your focus and investigation(s) are reasonable • Submit equipment requests TOGETHER WITH EVIDENCE OF COLLABORATION WITHIN THE PLANNING PROCESS. If you want to use equipment that falls outside of what it is reasonable for us to provide, decide who is going to provide it.
Wednesday May 11th • Every grade 11 IB Biology, Chemistry, Physics and ESS student will be off timetable for the whole of the day to work on their investigations. • You will not be allowed to leave until you have finished and submitted a summary of your results in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.
Assessment • DURING GROUP 4 DAY • During the project your individual progress and that of the group will be monitored by your teachers. This will be used to award a grade for PERSONAL skills. These grades are potentially worth 6 points towards your final IA mark (out of 48) which is 3% of your final grade for a group 4 subject.
Assessment • By Wednesday 18th May • Each student will be expected to complete the following sections in their Group 4 booklet:- • Self –Evaluation (pg 5) • Peer Reflection (pg 6-8) • Self reflection essay (pg9) • This will enable us to give you a grade for Personal Skills in PowerSchoolgradebook.
Should you be nervous? • NO!!!! • Most grade 11 students say that group 4 day is one of the highlights of their IB Science courses. As long as you work hard, collaborate with each other, and complete all the sections that you need to, you will be fine.
