Billings Area Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)/ Infant Mortality (IM) Reduction “Closing the Gap” Initiative Purpose: National campaign designed to help improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations, who are affected by serious diseases and health conditions at far greater rates than other American groups in the Nation. African Americans Hispanic Americans Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and American Indians/Alaska Natives

    3. Health Disparity Focus As part of the initiative to eliminate disparities of Health the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) focused on Six (6) major areas: Diabetes Heart Disease and Stroke Cancer screening and management Infant Mortality Child and adult immunizations HIV/AIDS

    4. Interagency Funding Agreement Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Indian Health Service (IHS)

    5. Approaches Research coordination Tribal epidemiology centers Risk reduction efforts in communities Campaign to improve awareness of factors that contribute to infant mortality Intended to strengthen and expand existing education, awareness and outreach activities that would result in helping to “Close the Health Disparities Gap” on Infant Mortality.
