Ending of the Civil War • On April 2, 1865 General Lee withdrew from Richmond, allowing the Union to take over the Confederate capital • Lee tried to flee west with what little troops he had left, but Grant stopped him
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse • On April 9, 1865 Grant and Lee met at Appomattox Courthouse to sign the papers of surrender • Grant was quoted as saying: “The rebels are our countrymen again.” • On April 26, 1865 General Joseph E Johnston surrendered to Sherman, ending the Civil War.
