  2. Sherman’s March to the Sea Union General Sherman attacked the heart of the South. He took his army on a march from Tennessee to the Georgia Coast. He cut a path of destruction 250miles long across the South.

  3. Sherman’s army destroyed everything in its path including burning down Atlanta. This is called Total War –armies attack armies, property, and land. – destroy anything useful

  4. Goals of Total War • One goal was to destroy the South’s ability to continue fighting. • If the South had no factories or railroads left, they could not keep supplying their army. • The other goal was to prove to the people of the South that they were beaten and that their armies could not protect them.

  5. Appomattox • By 1865 it was clear that the South would lose the war. • General Lee surrendered his army to Union General Grant at a place called Appomattox Courthouse. • Terms of surrender: soldiers were required to turn over their rifles, but officers were allowed to keep their pistols. Soldiers were allowed to keep horses. Why do think Grant allowed them to keep horses????
