Early years LK term 1 st half term. Dear Parents / Guardians
E N D
Dear Parents / Guardians • We are trying a new approach to LK in the Early years, merging the topics of Jewish life and experiences with the Hebrew language and reading, making the teaching and learning of the Hebrew alphabet, more in line with the English Read Write Inc approach • The Jewish topic is presented, with key Hebrew vocabulary connected to the topic, and the first sound of the key word is introduced. For example: before Rosh Hashanah, the children learned touched and listened to a shofar, imitated the Shofar notes, and were introduced to the letter ש (emphasising that it makes the sound ‘sh’, not focusing on naming it). Along the way, 3 more words in Hebrew starting with the sound SH were also introduced. • We are using clips and videos from the web site of ‘shalom sesame’ and would like to encourage parents and guardians to visit the site and enjoy it with their children. • Parallel to the LK content, the children sing and love the Aleph Bet song. Every time a new letter is introduced, the children are asked to spot the letter and act out a pre-arranged action, when they spot it in the song. Here is the link to the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzjHjXe-2XU, which can also be found on the shalom sesame web site.
