60’s Troubles The Vietnam War shook America's military self-confidence to the core. More than 58,000 U.S. soldiers died fighting a war in which their seemingly all-powerful nation suffered a humiliating defeat. Washington, meanwhile, was determined to halt the spread of communism in Asia. It began sending weapons and increasing numbers of military advisers to South Vietnam.
Iconic women in the 60’s • After a career as a model, Monroe began to pursue work as a film actress. During the 1950s, she established a fervent following among movie-goers who responded to her unique blend of natural beauty, fragility, comic timing and raw sex appeal. The circumstances of her death have been the subject of intense controversy for more than 40 years. Early on August 5, 1962, Monroe was found dead at her house in Brentwood, California. The official cause of death was probable suicide, due to an overdose of sleeping pills. Until now you can still hear and see her around the world in books, actresses or singers trying to replica her image such as Nicki Minaj.
60’s magazine images • LIFE Magazine called the 1960s “A Divided Decade” that defied efforts to classify and label it. There was a feeling of hope and optimism as old barriers of race, gender and lifestyle began to break down. At the same time, a wave of violence and unrest was sweeping across the US. • LIFE Magazine had a lot to cover in the 1960s. The political scene alone, with the space race, civil rights movement, feminist movement, anti-war movement, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Watts race riots and the assassinations of President Kennedy, Malcom X and Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been enough.
Ossie Clark • An English fashion Designer who was a major in the swinging sixties in London. He is renowned for his vintage designs by present day designs.
