Fascism A governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, ect., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.
Characteristics of fascism • Racism is very strong • No human rights • Government controls everything- form of socialism • Authorities have power to enforce anything • Punishment is very harsh • Labor is suppressed • Religion and government are intertwined
Mussolini’s rise to power • Mussolini attracted the majority of the Italian population by using nationalistic, anti liberal, and anti socialistic propaganda which served as a threat to the rest of the world.
Mussolini’s Beliefs • He believed he could bring about a new Roman Empire that would be strong enough to be recognized around the world. • He believed that fascism was a religious concept. Inspired dictators fascism

Life in Fascist Italy • Very sexist and racist • People had very little control over their personal lives • There was a secret police- OVRA. Founded in 1927.
Economy • The economy was controlled by state corporations • At the end of WWl, the economy was very weak, inflation, mass unemployment, food shortages, and strikes • Depression

Italy’s role in WWII • Italy began its part in WWII on June 10th, 1940 by helping Germany invade France. • During the war, Italy fought against the allies with Germany and Japan. • After the Japanese attack on Pear Harbor, Italy and Germany declared war on the US at the same time (just like WWl)
Mussolini’s Death • There were many assassination attempts on Mussolini while he was the leader of Italy, but none were successful. • Mussolini and his mistress was finally executed by a firing squad on April 28th, 1945.
Impact of war on Italy • Although Italy did not play a big part in terms of Combat in WWll, they made a huge contribution on the defeat of Germany. • They caused Germany to delay the operation of Barbarossa which would have reinforced their allies. (invasion of Russia)
