  2. Background • Some flash memory in MX104 devices goes bad, data corruption • Mid/Early 2016, first signs • Second / Redundant routing engines (REs) ordered, installed

  3. Escalation • Increasing rate of failure • 8/2017 case escalated with Juniper • management attention • bi-weekly calls • expedited RMA process

  4. Technical Details • Three flash devices in production • ATP -JP4, ATP -JP6, Swissbit • Problem manifested by: • corrupted packages • inability to write (e.g. commit) • RE failover • Various workarounds tried • reinstall, tftp, external USB, install second flash on-board, watch checksums, “free” block utility, etc.

  5. Solution • Replace all –JP4 REs and update to 16.1R7.7 • Approximately 50 –JP4 units at sites • Working through expedited FCO / bulk RMA process with Juniper • We’ll be contacting you…
