  2. In this lesson you will learn how to identify the subject and audience of your essay by using the action verbs and repetition.

  3. You are specifically looking for information that tells you the subject, audience, and purpose of your essay.

  4. Remember… Subject-the topic that you are writing about Audience-the person or group you are writing to

  5. Underline the noun that appears to be a topic you could write about. 1 2 Write this noun in the Subject box. Choose the more specific subject you are going to write about and write it in below the general subject. 3 Write down the person or group you are writing to in the Audience box. 4

  6. 1 Your  principal  has  asked  for  student  feedback  about   the  school  rules.  Think  of  a  rule  that  you  believe  could   be  changed  or  improved.  Write  a  letter  to  your   principal  explaining  why  this  rule  should  be  changed;  make  sure  to  support  your  stance  with  convincing   reasons  and  evidence.

  12. Carefully read the prompt on the next slide. Use the action verbs and repetition to identify the subject of the essay. Then, complete the subject and audience portion of your SAP box.

  13. Teachers often become a big part of a student’s life. Think about how you would describe one of your teachers that has meant a lot to you. Write a letter to this teacher that explains why you would describe him or her this way.

  14. The following student attempted to identify the subject in a different prompt. Look at his attempt. See if you can figure out what his mistake was. Write a note to him explaining what he did wrong and how he can fix it. Be sure to use complete sentences!

  15. The mayor of your city is coming to visit your school, and your teacher wants you to be prepared for the visit. Think of a problem that you see in your city. Write a letter to the mayor that discusses that problem; make sure to include support for your claim!

  17. Directions: In a moment, you will see a prompt. Carefully read the prompt. Then, create your SAP boxes. Finally, use the action verbs and repetition to identify the subject and audience for your essay.

  18. Most people have read the studies that show that junk food is harmful to your body, and yet, they continue to eat a lot of it. Think about the reasons a person might choose to eat junk food. Write an essay that explains why a person might make this choice; make sure to include evidence to support your argument.
