2. Marley Wareham Hello, my name is Marley Wareham. I am in the eighth grade at Jackson Heights Middle School. The Giver was a book we recently read and finished work sheets on. I found the book very different and interesting. It is a book that makes you think and reconsider if things could possibly be ran differently in our world today. When choosing how to display the information of my project, I chose to use the museum to separate the information into different categories and go over each topic. 7. The Giver Every few generations there is a new “Receiver of Memory”. Their job in the community is to receive the memories of past times and give their thoughts when asked by one of the elders or chief leader. With all of the memories comes an immense amount of responsibility. If a Receiver of Memory is released and leaves the community, all of the memories escape from their head into the heads of the community members and they start to experience feelings and thoughts that they have never thought of before. Because of this they begin to worry and question whether or not their community is fair and whether or not there is a better way of life that they are being cheated out of. After going through all of this the elders realize that when selecting a Receiver of Memory they must be cautious and considerate. One thing that is in common with all the Giver and the new Receiver of Memory(Jonas), is that they both had light eyes. Being in the only elder with light eyes and the only Receiver of Memory, the Giver had earned great respect as well as a sense of fear and difference from the community members. He was a man of great wisdom and expanding knowledge skills. Back to Room 1

9. What Happened… Once Jonas realizes that there is more to the world then what his community is allowing him; he experiences the feeling of love and sees what he is missing out on. Him and the Giver decide to form a plan that will set Jonas free and give the community members the knowledge and skill to know how to either rebel or attempt to realize their situation. There plan begins simply by having Jonas sneak out in the middle of the night and visit the Giver before he leaves so that he can give him courageous memories and a brave attitude. It seems to work well until Jonas is told that Gabe, a new born, is being released. This is where it starts to get complicated and change the form of their plan. Jonas is forced to make some hard decisions and use every ounce of strength he may contain. Back to Room 1

11. ~What I Would Do~ I believe that if the situation demanded it and I was needed to give of service, I would be willing to put my life on the line for a friend. Once a person is impacted by another person or their interests, a bond is formed and as years go on the bond only becomes stronger between the two people. Having a close or dear friend gives someone a sense of acceptance and reliability on one another. In the book’s situation, The Giver, I feel I would have done the same thing as Jonas with the taking of the child and the risking of my own life. If anything had been done differently I would have made sure I visited the Giver even if I left at a late time. Back to Room 2

12. Seeing Color for the 1st Time In Jonas’s community sameness involves every one seeing in black and white. No one can see colors let alone understand the meaning of the word therefore they would understand the transaction from black and white to color if it happened to them. When Jonas first sees color it is the color red. Him and Asher were tossing an apple around for recreation and he saw the apple change in mid-air. He did not understand the change and repeatedly tried to see it again. When this did not work he became frustrated and soon gave up. Other few occurrences happened along the way where he saw this change and it wasn’t until the Giver told him that he was seeing a thing called color and he soon would identify each of them by name. In this situation I believe I would be frightened and unable to describe this experience. Color would become a vivid and majestic pleasure for my sight. Back to Room 2

13. Newborn: Gabe Gabe was a newborn that was unlike the others in ways of his appearance and of his actions. Jonas’s father was a nurturer at the nurturing center and offered to take Gabe into their home for a couple of months so that he would become more stable and be ready for his 1 year ceremony. As the months went on Jonas seemed to be the only one that could calm him down. At night he would secretly send memories of happiness, exhaustion, and calmness. He told no one of this giving of memory and proceeded to have Gabriel stay in his room at night. One night when he had spent the night with the Giver (going over their plan for his departed) he came home to find out that the would be releasing (killing) baby Gabe because of his lack of headway made in the past couple of months. Jonas decided that he must save Gabe so that they could both escape the community and live. In this situation I would have done the same thing in taking Gabe. Back to Room 2

14. ~The Great Plan~ As it was said before if the Receiver of Memory was to leave the community all of their memories would go to the community members and they would be forced to seek help from the Giver and/or realize their situation and rebel or change their ways. The Giver and Jonas came up with the idea for the great escape that would force the community members to seek the Giver’s help and he would bring the idea across of changing their ways for the better. It was said that Jonas would sneak out at a late hour (couple hours before dawn) and would visit the Giver as he would give him last memories of courage and bravery. The Giver would leave the door unlocked and Jonas would quickly receive the memory and say goodbye. Back to Room 3

15. ~Light Eyes~ Having light eyes in the community was a rare occurrence and was rude to mention when upon the topic of discussing eyes. It meant that there was a separation from sameness by someone’s looks. In the book, The Giver, Jonas and few others have light eyes. The girl from the sevens, the newborn Gabriel, Jonas, and the Giver all have light colored eyes. There eyes are actually a type of blue but since the community members can not see in color all they can tell is that their eyes are different. Jonas was surprised that Gabe could receive the memories that he gave him. The theory was that the people with light colored eyes might have been born with a gift apart from the other community members. Back to Room 3

16. ~The Real Escape~ After Jonas found out Gabe would be being released that morning so he decided to take Gabe with him so he strapped him into the seat of his dad’s bike and started off. He was hiding in the shadows of the street corners and saw that the sun would be coming up soon so he decided to skip seeing the Giver and went on across the bridge and off of the beaten path. They went through many obstacles such as dogging the sight of the planes as they were searching for them. Many harsh weather conditions affected their travel time and food became scarce as the days went by. Finally when Jonas had given his last memory of warmth and sunshine to Gabe during a snow storm he came across a red sled at the top of the hill and held Gabe tight as zoomed down the hill. As he was going down through the soft wintry snow he began to see lights in the distance; warm, welcoming, traditional lights that were lights of Elsewhere. He had made it. Back to Room 3

17. Risk #1 By taking Gabriel away and sneaking away from his house Jonas was taking a massive risk. If he had been caught outside of his house after hours he would have been removed from his position as the New Receiver of Memory and perhaps even released by death of the community completely. In my opinion Jonas made the right decision by taking Gabe and showing him the right way to live life. Back to Room 4

18. Risk #2 Jonas was told not to discuss his training with anyone but the Giver himself. He was allowed to lie, ask personal or rude questions, and was not allowed to share his feelings at night and his dreams in the morning. By doing all of this people questioned his new behavior and he wasn’t allowed to tell anyone. This made it hard for him and quite stressful. Back to Room 4

19. Risk #3 While Jonas and Gabe were “on the run” they were slowed down by weakness and harsh weather. They took the risk of dying by starvation and freezing to death because they were lacking in the appropriate dress for time of the year. Also when Jonas found the sled on the hill he took the chance of wrecking especially with Gabriel in his arms. He had only ridden on one once and it was in a dream or received memory. Back to Room 4
