One way is to see if the word stands alone. If it does, it’s just an adverb. If that same words begins a phrase, it is a preposition in a prepositional phrase.
Adverb: Susie invited me over. Preposition: I stepped over her dog. Adverb: No one was around. Preposition: We walked around the yard. Adverb: My cat followed me outside. Preposition: The cat went outside thedoor.
