  1. The Future of Health Care with Informatics By Carl Fulton Computers for Health Care Professionals Professor Rouse June 24, 2009

  2. Nursing Informatics • The use of Information Technology (IT) in nursing. • Nursing Informatics is a nursing-specific subset of the larger Healthcare Informatics. • Information Technology refers to technology used for information processing. • Can also refer to technology used for communication. • IT could refer to use of internet, computer, software, and networking devices.

  3. Definition of “Nursing Informatics” • American Nurses Association: “Nursing informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice… to support patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings.” (ANA, 2008, p. 65). • Informatics is a term reportedly derived from Russian “Informatika”. • Informatika: “Discipline of science which investigates the structures and properties (not specific content) of scientific information..." (As cited in Thede, 2009. Sackett & Erdley, 2002, pp. 453-477). • Informatika = Informatics = Computer Science

  4. The Need For Information Technology In Nursing & Healthcare • Quote from Sheila, teacher & caregiver, respondent of Intel’s 1999 People & Practices Research Survey: • “I hate to tell you this, but we really don’t need another technology to help us watch more television. What we really need is something to help us look in on my mother-in-law who lives alone in upstate New York. She has early stage Alzheimer’s, and the closest person who can help her is Tom’s sister who lives five hours away. Surely we’re not the only ones needing help helping our parents!”. (Dishman, 2002). • The quote, an aging population, and a versatile & ever-changing health care system demonstrates the need for further development of computer bio-technology.

  5. The Future of Nursing Informatics:  Technology Demo on Capitol Hill- March 16, 2004 • Georgia Institute of Technology- Aware Home: • Georgia Institute of Technology has introduced a picture frame that uses the internet to help monitor the physical activity of older adults & parents in their homes.

  6. The Future of Nursing Informatics:  Technology Demo on Capitol Hill- March 16, 2004 • GE security: • GE has created a system for care givers and families that helps seniors maintain independence and live at home longer. Functions by monitoring daily activities, medication compliance, and additional activities. Items of daily living, such as pill bottles, contain electronic sensors. ADL’s analyzed by a computer database.

  7. GE Monitoring System

  8. The Future of Nursing Informatics:  Technology Demo on Capitol Hill- March 16, 2004 • University of Virginia: • Created a “smart chair” that monitors your breathing and heart rate. • Taken automatically on a daily basis. • Contains sensors that listen to your walking patterns and footsteps. • Analyzes for increased fall risk.

  9. The Future of Nursing Informatics:  Technology Demo on Capitol Hill- March 16, 2004 • Oregon Health Sciences University/Elite Care: • Has introduced an “intelligent” bed. • Tracks weight and sleep patterns to help detect disease. • Also prevents falling that may occur while attempting to adjust the lights at night- • Turns the lights on & off for you.
