  1. NATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT MONTHNovember 2018 Using Career to Break Barriers, Empower Lives and Achieve Equity

  2. USING CAREERS

  3. Exploring Careers Careers basically involve working with People, Data, Things and Ideas. Although most any career will involve all of the above, one is generally dominant. People generally have a dominant preference for working with People, Data, Things, or Ideas. However, it is important to develop skills in all these areas.

  5. DATA

  6. IDEAS

  7. THINGS

  8. What Is Your Preference? ?

  9. BREAKING BARRIERS

  10. Think of someone you know of that has overcome major obstacles or in their lives to become successful. What did they accomplish? What was one of their obstacles? What did that person do to be able to overcome the obstacle?

  11. EMPOWERING LIVES

  12. Important factors that empower lives include having skills to survive independently, access to education and a supportive and connected community. What make you feel strong? What makes you feel confident? What makes you feel like you have a voice?

  13. ACHIEVING EQUITY

  14. Equality What do you see? Does it seem fair? What is unjust? An equal distribution of resources does not necessarily create an equal outcome. If the picture seems unjust, how could you fix it?

  15. Equity Imagine that the fence is a metaphor for the shorter child’s life experiences. What are some examples of resources that some kids have that others lack? (education, parks, wilderness, cell phone)
