EEE • You will be participating in the Extended Environmental Experience from the 7th – 11 September. • You have the opportunity to explore the wonderful natural environment of the Great South West walk • This experience will involve walking through the Lower Glenelg National park • This will be a minimal impact expedition as you carry all you need for the week in you hiking pack. • Exploring the concepts of ecotourism, healthy waterways and waste management in a pristine environment

Tuesday Day 7 We will explore the concepts of • Water and healthy waterways • Protection and conservation of marine environments • Waste management This will involve active participation in • 1. An excursion to Rickets Point to explore the Marine Park and assist with maintaining the foreshore by planting and weeding . • 2. A Kayak down Mordialloc creek to observe first hand the effect of industry and urban build alongside water ways

Recycling program • As a class you will be responsible for helping to maintain the school recycling program • This will involve: • emptying full recycling bins around the school, • making sure all classrooms and office areas have a useable recycling bin, • sifting through the recycling bins to make sure that they contain ONLY the relevant material and no food scraps and other rubbish. • bringing the empty bins back into the school grounds once they have been emptied by VISY recycling • ..\..\CUE 2014\VISY\RECYCLING procedures 2014.docx

Personal Environmental/ Sustainability Project - ACTION • Over the time in this Domain either individually or as a small group you are to initiate an achievable sustainability project. • This could involve you doing something at home, or school or in your local community

Some ideas include • Assisting with the composting for the grade 5-6 garden • Organising a recycle bin for used batteries and the disposing of them appropriately • Collecting used coffee • Composting at home • Signs in class rooms re heaters/lights/air conditioners • Education re showers/ water wastage • Plant a garden • Investigate and make a range of homemade non toxic cleaners for your home/ classroom • Volunteer to clean-up foreshore/ planting etc

Water Management in Australia How much water do I use? • On average, Australian’s use 22 buckets of water a day! • In many countries around the world there is no running water and women and children spend hours fetching water. These walks are often dangerous and the water undrinkable. Our usage is affected by our home appliances, water saving behaviours such as turning taps off when cleaning teeth, use of water tanks and diversion of grey water around the home.

How do I use/potentially misuse water? Individually and silently think about 3 ways in which you use water every day… Now think about three ways you may potentially misuse water…. Where do you think households use the most water????

Where does it go after I use it? Urban Water Cycle • In Melbourne, the water that comes out of your tap has travelled a long way to get there and has a long way to go after you use it! • Rain that falls on our mountainous catchment areas north-east of Melbourne travels downhill and eventually into a reservoir. Melbourne Water manages Melbourne's catchments, which are protected from people and pollution, making our drinking water a very high quality.

Water from the reservoirs travels through hundreds of kilometres of pipes and through your water meter (so we can count how much water you use) and out of your tap. You use water for many things at home like drinking, washing, watering, and of course, flushing the toilet. When water leaves your home it is not clean anymore, so it goes to a sewage treatment plant. • Waste water from your home can have some interesting things in it, like phones, false teeth and money. As you can imagine, it takes quite some time to clean all the wastewater. Once it has been “cleaned”, water is pumpedoutto sea or some of the water is recycled and re-used on farms, parks, golf courses, schools and even some people's houses!
