  2. I. The Past History of Jerusalem.II.THE PRESENT CONTROVERSY CONCERNING Jerusalem [US opened its Embassy in Jerusalem on 14th May, 2018] A. Prophecy of Jerusalem’s Past History Fulfilled. 1. Jeremiah’s Prophecy concerning Jerusalem Being Burnt Down and Inhabitants Deported to Babylon. a. The Prediction of Coming Doom by Jeremiah: Jer. 25:11, 12 i. The Desolation of the Land: And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment. ii. The Deportation from the Land: These nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. iii. The Destruction of Babylon: When seventy years are accomplished…I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation…for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans…

  3. a. The Prediction of Coming Doom by Jeremiah:Jer. 25:11, 12 b. The Prediction fulfilled in the Calamitous Burning Down of Jerusalem. II Chr. 36:18-19 • All the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. • And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.

  4. 1. Jeremiah’s Prophecy concerning Jerusalem Burnt Down and Inhabitants Deported to Babylon. 2. Jerusalem Land to be Liberated for Seventy years. • The Reality of the Desolation of the Land. II Chr. 36:20-21 • And them…carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: to fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

  5. a. The Reality of the Desolation of the Land. II Chr. 36:20-21 b. The Reason for the Deportation from the Land – • The Yearly Sabbath of Rest for the Land Instructed. Lev. 25:2-4 • Six years thou shalt sow thy field…But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. ii. The Jubilee Sabbath of Rest for the Land Instituted. Lev. 25:8-11 • Number seven sabbaths of years…seven times seven years… cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound…ye shall hallow the fiftieth year iii. The Degreeof their Disobedience – seventy years. II Chr. 36:21 II Chronicles 36:21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

  6. b. The Reason for the Deportation from the Land – Lev. 25:2-11c. The Restoration to and of the Land. Dan. 9:2 d. The Reign of the Gentiles in the Golden Image of Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream: i. Pictured in the head of gold and other Parts of the image in… Dan. 2:31-35 ii. Cyrus Predetermined to free the People from Captivity. Isa. 45:1; 44:28 iii. Partially Fulfilling the Times of the Gentiles: Lk. 21:24 • Jerusalem…trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles iv. Parenthetically Fulfilling the Fulness of the Gentiles. Rom. 11:25 blindness in part…to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. • The Church Commenced in Jerusalem(9 June – Pentecost Sun.) Acts 2:1-5 • The Church Centred in Jerusalem to spread to the rest of the world. Acts 1:8 • The Church Consummating in heavenly Jerusalem. Heb. 12:22-24

  7. 1. Jeremiah’s Prophecy concerning Jerusalem Burnt Down and Inhabitants Deported to Babylon.2. Jerusalem Land to be Liberated for Seventy years.3. The Prediction in Daniel’s Vision of Seventy weeks. • From the Order to restore Jerusalem to Messiah the Prince would be Seventy Weeks [490 years] – after (seven weeks and) three score and two weeks (483 years) shall Messiah be cut off. 9:25 • The Prophecy Partly Fulfilled in Christ’s Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem. Matt. 21:9-11 • The Parenthecal Period of the Church. • The Postponed Seventieth Week of Great Tribulation. Dan. 12:1there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time…

  8. 4. Jesus’ Three-fold Prophecy and its Fulfilment. Mt. 24:3 a. The Calamity that would befall Jerusalem– when shall these things be? Matthew 24:2-3And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as He sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, (1) when shall these things be? and (2) what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and (3) of the end of the world? i. The Destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70AD. Mt. 24:2 • The Dispersion of the Jews to the four corners of the world. Mt. 24:4-12 • Reference to Daniel’s Abomination of Desolation in the Great Tribulation Mt. 24:15-21ff • Jesus’ earlier Desperate cry over Jerusalem. Mt. 23:37; Lk. 13:34, 35 • O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets… Behold, your house is left unto you desolate…Ye shall not see Me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is He that cometh…

  9. Conclusion: a. Prophecies Related to Israel’s Past have all been fulfilled, viz. • The 70 years of Deportation from Jerusalem to Babylon. • The 70AD Dispersion of the Jews and razing of Jerusalem, etc. b. Thus, the Rest of the Prophecy concerning Present and Prospective Jerusalem must be fulfilled: i. The Return of the Jews to Jerusalem and Israel Reinstated as a State. See #B ii. The Coming of Jesusto Reign – Mt. 24:3b, 29, 30-31; 25:31ff iii. The Consummation of the Age – Mt. 24:3c

  10. During its long history, Jerusalem has been attacked 52 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, besieged 23 times, and destroyed twice. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE, making Jerusalem one of the oldest cities in the world. B. Prophecy of Jerusalem’s Present History Being Fulfilled. • The Resurgence of the Israel or the Resurrection of Dry Bones. Eze. 37 • The Demise of all Ancient civilisations. • The “Durability” of the Jews since Abraham. • According to Masoretic text of the Bible, Abraham was born about 2056 BCE and lived for 175 years, so dying about 1881 BCE, which is about 3900 years ago • The Balfour Declaration, (November 2, 1917), stated the British support for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”  Ezekiel 37:12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.

  11. 2. The Recovery of the Remnant: Isa. 11:11 • The Raising of the Ensign. Isa. 11:12 • And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

  13. The Rose Rising and Blossoming. Isa. 11:10-12 • The Root of Jesse springing up into a Rose. • And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. • The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. Zech. 12:3 In that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. • The UNESCO Resolution against Jerusalem.   15. III. The Prospective Eschatology of Jerusalem. Lk. 21:25-33 A. Its Eschatology. • Jerusalem in the Great Tribulation – For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Mt. 24:21 • As Predicted by Zechariah– all nations against Jerusalem to battle Zech. 14:1, 2-7 • As Predicted by Jesus – O Jerusalem,Jerusalem (Mt. 23:37; Lk. 13:34, 35) Mt. 24:15-21-28 • As Predicted by John, the Apostle. Rev. chs. 6-19 • As Predicted by Daniel – a time of trouble, such as never was… Dan. 12:1

  16. 1. Jerusalem in the Great Tribulation 2. Jerusalem when Christ comes. a. As Predicted by Zechariah. Zech. 12:9-14; 14:1-7 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem…and they shall look on Me Whom they have pieced. Zech. 12:9, 10 b. As predicted by John. Rev. 19:11-16 3. Jerusalem in the Millennium. a. As Predicted by Zechariah. Zech. 14:8, 9-21 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and His name one.

Isa. 11:6 c. As Predicted by Ezekiel– Afterward he brought me to the temple (41:1) Eze. Chs. 40-48 A Third Temple will be established in Jerusalem, capital of the Messianic Kingdom. • As Predicted by John – Rev. chs. 20(:4), 21 they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Jerusalem in the Millennium - Zechariah 8:3 - Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth…the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain 8:4, 5 - Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age…the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing" 8:8, 9 - And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. 8:22 - Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.

  19. Jerusalem in the Millennium - Zechariah 14:8 - And it shall be in that day that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. 14:11 - And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. 14:16, 17 - And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

  20. Conclusion: We are marching to mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. Heb. 12:22f 4. Jerusalem in Heaven. Rev. 21:2 • And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. • The New Jerusalem is called "the Holy City," and described as "the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from My God."
