ID system lingers in limbo [edited] USDA has dropped ideas inspired by the first mad cow case By Philip Brasher DesMoines Register March 12, 2006 That Texas farmer whose Brahma cross tested positive last year for mad cow disease made a better case for national livestock identification than any consumer advocate could have. Federal investigators reported that the unidentified farmer kept "very few" records on his herd and often sent cattle to market with no identification whatsoever. With a mandatory national ID system, records on the age and whereabouts of all those cattle would be readily available.

State Postpones Consideration Of Livestock Registration Rules KWTX March 9, 2006 The Texas Animal Health Commission has canceled a meeting later this month at which commissioners were to have considered proposed rules requiring premise registration for raisers of livestock, exotic livestock and domestic and exotic fowl. The rules affect an estimated 200,000 sites in the state. More than 8,200 of them had been registered voluntarily as of March 8 and voluntary registration continues, the commission said.

Manure pie stops tagging in its tracks By Victoria Wallack Keep Maine Current March 15, 2006 The Legislature’s agriculture committee has backed off plans to recommend rules this session on the tagging of farm animals to help track such diseases as mad cow – a case of which was just confirmed in Alabama – after protestors threw manure at state agriculture officials during a hearing in Ellsworth Saturday. That vote, which was 10 to 2, has divided the chairmen on the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee over whether it sends the right message.
